professional community design & facilitation
hex-works
HEX-Works is a family of communities related to human-empathic experience design and innovation efforts. As an umbrella organization, HEX-Works promotes the amazing creativity within the organization, strives to foster evidence-based design practices, and organizes innovations. The goal is a cultural paradigm shift that will democratize innovation and back Design Thinking into the DNA or the company.
building a family of professional communities takes grit
It is a huge task. The bigger the company, the bigger the challenge. It take vision, determination, and a lot of politics and pushing.
I believe people work better together than they can apart. If we want to tackle big problems, we cannot silo work, promote turf-war mentality, of isolate our work in the fear of losing credit.
If we want to change the world, we need to do it as a unified strength.
Project Objectives
Solve big company problems through communication, collaboration, and coordination.
Too much time and money was being wasted with overlapping projects, unshared research, and a general disinterest in sharing ideas. This needed to change.
My Contributions
I worked with my leadership peers to identify opportunity areas. I then created a scalable community architecture that promoted collaborative values and grew the organization from a grassroots team of about 50 to a global force of over 400.
Using a simple, repeatable organizational structure and methodology, this series of communities that I built tackled big company product portfolio problems.
It now owns and operates a community driven product design guide, holds an annual summit, produces quarterly newsletters, and has expanded from focusing on design to exploring innovation frameworks and promoting Agile methodolgies.
by The numbers
This series of communities started with its first modest community of about 60 people focusing on product design and blossomed into a viable pattern for improving large scale visibility, communication, collaboration, and cooperation.
